Sega Nomad Screen and Capacitor replacement

Just finished working on a customers Sega Nomad. It had a very poor screen that was clearly damaged or over-heated at some point. Never seen one like this before. Even when the screens are fully working, they are dim and blurry, so customers often want them changing.
The customer also wanted the capacitors replacing, so that’s where I started. I was very pleased to see that the console was in very good condition inside. No leaking from the old surface mount caps. This always makes the job faster. Old caps removed and pads prepped for new ones. I always remove all the old solder and clean the area with Isopropyl before installing.
New caps installed and tested that it’s still all working. No problem, so on to the display upgrade.
The selected screen is from Hispeedido and can be purchased online from eBay or Aliexpress. I’ve installed a couple of these and have always been happy with the results. They connect on the RGB video signal and look better then the composite screens I used to install. The mod does require quite a few wires though.
I first tested that the screen was working after soldering the wires. All looking good so far, just needed to install it in the front of the case. The mod kit came with plastic spacers to make this alignment easier, but its still a fiddly process.
That looks much better now. Testing and getting it ready to return to its owner.
Neil – 2025
This was my Nomad, I am so lucky to have found Neil as I really didn’t know where to go to get the screen replaced. As a collector you are always anxious sending off your console, especially the rare ones but Neil was brilliant, sending updates and then seeing this post of all the work done was wonderful. The console has arrived safely back today and works like a dream. The new screen is amazing, and exceeds everything I hoped for. I cant recommend Neil more highly for the professional job he has done.
Awesome work as always Neil!
Was there any region free mod work done or keeping it stock Genesis?
The customer didn’t request request any more changes. Just caps and display.
